The "Michele Novaro" International Composition Competition is a 3-year project conceived by Hon. Lorenzo Becattini, with the support of Italgas. Roberto Prosseda, as artistic director of the Mendelssohn Association, has been charged with the artistic direction of the project. The Competition aims to stimulate young musicians to create works capable of reflecting the identity, culture and spirit of contemporary Italy. It is named after Michele Novaro, author of the music for the Italian Anthem. The three-year project (2016 - 2018) included three editions, each focusing on a specific theme. The award ceremony for each edition took place each year in one of the three cities that have been capitals of Italy: Turin (2016), Florence (2017) and Rome (2018, with a final concert at the Quirinale on December 9, 2018, with the Ensemble 900 of the Accademia di S. Cecilia). The Jury presidents were Luca Lombardi (2016), Krszysztof Pendereski (2017) and Ennio Morricone (2018).
